Frequently Asked Questions

The best paint depends on your project and the surface you're working on. We recommend the following options:

  • Acrylic Paint: Water-based craft acrylic paints are easy to work with, available in a wide range of colors, and ideal for most small to medium stencil projects. You can also thin the paint with a medium (like Folk Art Extender) to create soft, watercolor-style or shaded effects.
  • Fabric Paint: For textile projects, fabric paint provides flexibility and washability. Be sure to heat-set the paint once dry for lasting results.
  • Chalk Paint: Great for furniture and décor projects, chalk paint adheres well to various surfaces and gives a matte, vintage finish.
  • Spray Paint: Suitable for outdoor stenciling or quick coverage on smooth surfaces like glass, metal, or plastic. Make sure to secure the stencil tightly to avoid overspray.
  • Latex Wall Paint: For larger wall projects, we recommend a good-quality flat or matte latex wall paint. If you're stenciling just one feature wall, buying a small sample pot can be a cost-effective solution—most paint stores can tint it in the exact color you want.

To achieve clean edges, always use minimal paint and apply in thin layers, building up color gradually. This helps prevent paint from bleeding under the stencil.

After use, gently wipe or rinse the stencil with warm water and mild soap. For dried paint, soak briefly and use a soft brush. Avoid bending the stencil while cleaning.

With proper cleaning and care, the stencil can be used many times, as it is made from Mylar – a durable, flexible, and fully reusable material.

Mistakes are part of the process—don't worry! Stenciling is a handmade art form, and slight imperfections often add to its charm.

If paint bleeds under the stencil and is still wet, gently dab it with a damp cotton swab or baby wipe. If the paint has dried, use a small flat brush and your base coat to carefully touch up the area.

In some cases, depending on the design, you can also slightly reposition the stencil to cover the mistake and paint over it with your stencil color.

Start with a clean, dry floor. Tape the stencil securely and use a foam roller or stencil brush with minimal paint. Work in sections, allow drying time between applications, and seal the surface with a protective topcoat.

To stencil on furniture, make sure the surface is clean and dry. Lightly tape the stencil in place and use a stencil brush or sponge with minimal paint. Dab gently in thin layers to avoid bleeding.
