How to Use Popular Stencils?

Not sure where to begin with your new stencil? Don’t worry — using even the most detailed designs is easier than it looks.

With just a few basic tools and a little prep, you can create something that looks like it came straight out of a designer’s studio.

1. Prep the Surface

Make sure the surface is clean, dry, and smooth. If you’re working with wood, a light sanding helps the paint stick better. For walls or furniture, wipe away dust with a soft cloth — it makes a big difference!

2. Position & Secure Your Stencil

Use painter’s tape to hold your stencil in place. For curved or tricky surfaces, a light spray of repositionable adhesive on the back of the stencil can help keep everything stable without leaving a mark.

3. Choose the Right Paint

• Walls/Furniture – Acrylic paint dries quickly and gives great coverage.
• Fabric – Use fabric paint to make your designs last through washes.
• Paper & Cards – Inks or spray paints work beautifully for crisp results.

4. Apply the Paint (Gently!)

Use a stencil brush or sponge and apply the paint in layers using a dabbing or circular motion. Less is more here — too much paint can bleed under the edges. For big areas, a small roller saves time and keeps things even.

5. Peel, Reveal & Repeat

Once you’re done painting, carefully remove the stencil while the paint is still wet. Let everything dry completely before adding more layers or details.
